How to Format a Google Docs Manuscript for Ebook.

Formatting your manuscript correctly is crucial for a smooth conversion to Amazon Kindle eBook and it can seem overwhelming. There are a few things I learned while publishing my first book, Cannabis 101. Here are some guidelines to assist you in your process:

Basic Formatting Tips:

  • Font and Size:

    • Use a standard font like Times New Roman or Arial.

    • Set the font size to 12 points.
(Some people prefer 11 - I believe 12 when used with Times New Roman reads easier.)

  • Paragraph Spacing:

    • Set line spacing to 1.5 or double-spaced.

  • Indentation:

    • Use standard paragraph indentation. You can set this in the paragraph formatting options.

  • Page Breaks:

    • Insert a page break at the end of each chapter to ensure proper separation.

    • (This step is crucial - this is one mistake I kept making my first few times. When I would print preview, the format would be completely off.)

Advanced Formatting for Kindle:

  • Headings:

    • Use consistent heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) for chapter titles. Kindle recognizes these for better navigation.

  • Images:

    • Keep images simple and relevant.

    • Save images in a web-friendly format (JPEG, PNG).

    • Use a standard alignment (centered or left-aligned).

  • Table of Contents (TOC):

    • Create a clickable TOC using Kindle's built-in feature or hyperlink manually.

    • Ensure links work properly.

  • Hyperlinks:

    • Check any URLs or hyperlinks in your document. Ensure they're active

  • Remove Special Formatting:

    • Kindle may not handle complex formatting well. Simplify tables, charts, and complex layouts.

  • Export as EPUB:

    • EPUB is the best file format to export your ebook manuscript.

    • Just select File > Download As, then EPUB Publication (.epub) and you’re ready to go!

  • Preview Your eBook:

    • Use Amazon's Kindle Previewer tool to check how your eBook will appear on different devices.

  • Metadata:

    • Fill in accurate metadata (title, author, description) when publishing on KDP.

And there you have it! You have just formatted your first manuscript for ebook!
